Sarcoma

A sarcoma is a type of cancer that develops from certain tissues, such as bone, fat or muscle. While most sarcomas develop by chance and do not run in families, some sarcomas are hereditary. Hereditary cancers are caused by a mutation in a gene that can be passed on from generation to generation.

Symptoms

  • Lump or swelling in any part of the body
  • Lump that becomes painful or sore
  • Some people with sarcoma do not experience any symptoms

Causes/Risk Factors

  • Family history of sarcoma
  • Previous radiation therapy
  • Exposure to certain chemicals
  • Genetic mutations (see below)

Genetic Test

The following genetic tests may be appropriate based on your personal and/or family history:

  • p53 (Li-Fraumeni syndrome)
  • PTCH (Gorlin syndrome/NBCCS)
  • APC (adenomatous polyposis syndromes)
  • Genetic variants for sarcoma
