Brugada Syndrome (BRS)

BRS is characterized by a specific pattern seen on an electrocardiogram (EKG). This can be associated with right bundle branch block, a defect in the heart's conduction system that can also be seen on EKG. This pattern may be seen on resting EKG or may require an EKG while receiving a drug known as a sodium channel blocker.

Symptoms

  • Fainting (syncope)
  • Irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias)
  • Sudden cardiac death

Causes

  • Family history/genetics

Potential Triggers

  • Alcohol use
  • Medications
  • Large Meals
  • Fever

Diagnosis

A diagnosis of BRS is made based on a combination of your personal health history, family health history and cardiac testing (see below - not all of these tests may be ordered in an individual or family with suspected BRS).
• Electrocardiogram (ECG)
• Infusion testing
• Electrophysiology (EP) study
• Genetic testing

Genetic Tests

  • Currently there are 7 genes which may be tested when BRS is suspected.
