Long QT Syndrome

Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a rare inherited heart rhythm disorder. Fainting typically occurs during exercise or high emotions, less frequently at rest or during sleep, and usually without warning. In some cases, it can cause sudden death. Episodes can occur beginning in infancy, but are most common from the pre-teen years through the 20s.

Symptoms

  • Unexplained fainting
  • Unexplained seizures
  • Unexplained drowning or near drowning
  • Unexplained sudden death
  • Fainting during menstruation
  • Fainting or sudden death shortly after giving birth

Causes/Risk Factors

  • Family history of LQTS, typically a parent
  • Unexplained fainting in childhood or young adulthood
  • Rarely diagnosed after age 40
  • More common in women
  • Genetic mutations (see below)

The following genetic tests may be appropriate based on your personal and/or family history:

  • KCNH2
  • KCNQ1
  • KCNE1
  • KCNE2
  • SCN5A
