Adenomatous Polyposis Syndromes

Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and MYH-associated polyposis (MAP) are the two main causes of hereditary pre-cancerous colon polyps. Individuals with FAP or MAP are at increased risk for cancers of the digestive tract. Gardner syndrome and Turcot syndrome are variants of FAP.

Features of the condition

  • Multiple colon, rectal or other gastrointestinal polyps
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Cancer of the small intestine, thyroid, and pancreas
  • Childhood liver cancer (hepatoblastoma)

Risk Factors

  • Personal or family history of the features above
  • Relative with a known diagnosis of FAP or MAP

  • APC
  • MYH
