Huntington's Disease

Huntington disease (HD) is an inherited degenerative brain disorder associated with uncontrolled movements, loss of thinking ability and emotional disturbance. HD typically onsets between the ages of 30 and 50.

Symptoms

  • Changes in personality (irritability, depression)
  • Involuntary movements (chorea) which become more pronounced with disease progression
  • Poor coordination
  • Trouble learning new information or making decisions
  • Trouble walking, speaking and swallowing with disease progression

Causes/Risk Factors

  • Family history
  • Genetic mutations (see below)
