Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of conditions which cause damage to the optic nerve. In the majority of cases the damage is caused by increased pressures within the eye (intraocular pressure). The progression is often slow and gradual, but if left untreated can lead to blindness.

Symptoms

  • Eye redness
  • Blurry vision or halos
  • Eye pain with nausea/vomiting
  • Difficulties with night vision
  • Severe eye pain
  • Changes or loss in peripheral vision
  • Tunnel vision

Causes/Risk Factors

  • Family history of Glaucoma
  • Being over age 60
  • African American ethnicity
  • Diabetes
  • Steroid use
  • History of eye trauma
  • Being nearsighted
  • Elevated eye pressure
