Clotting Disorders

Blood clots can lead to serious complications when not detected early or if they are left untreated. Most blood clots are not caused by genetic factors, however there are certain gene mutations that can cause an increased risk for serious blood clots and recurrent pregnancy loss.

Symptoms

  • Unexplained recurrent pregnancy loss
  • Blood clots
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in legs
  • Pulmonary embolism (PE) in the lungs

Causes/Risk Factors

  • Abnormal blood clotting prior to age 50
  • Blood clots in liver, brain or intestine
  • Blood clots that occur without a clear cause
  • Blood clots that happen more than once
  • A history of frequent miscarriages
  • Stroke at a young age
  • A family history of abnormal blood clotting
  • Genetic mutations (see below
