Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most common causes of dementia. Dementia refers to a problem in the brain which reduces a person's ability to perform normal daily functions. Symptoms of AD generally start with minor forgetfulness and gradually progress over many years to major difficulties with speech, reading, writing and understanding.

Causes/Risk Factors

  • Personal or family history of early onset AD (between ages 30-60)
  • 2 or more family members with late onset AD (after age 60)
  • Genetic mutations (see below)
