Thyroid Cancer

While most thyroid cancer does not run in the family, a portion of thyroid cancers are hereditary. Hereditary cancers are caused by a mutation in a gene that can be passed on from generation to generation.

Symptoms

• A lump in the front of the neck
• Hoarse voice
• Swollen glands in the neck
• Difficulty swallowing or breathing
• Pain in the throat or neck
• A cough that persists and is not caused by a cold

Causes/Risk Factors

• Being female
• Diet low in iodine
• Radiation exposure
• Family history of thyroid cancer
• Genetic mutations (see below)

Genetic Test

The following genetic tests may be appropriate based on your personal and/or family history:

• MEN1 (multiple endocrine neoplasia type I)
• RET (multiple endocrine neoplasia type II)
• APC (familial adenomatous polyposis)
• Genetic variants for thyroid cancer
