Liver Cancer

Liver cancer is cancer that starts in the liver. Approximately 1 in 100 men and 1 in 250 women will develop liver cancer in their lifetime. Most liver cancers develop by random chance and do not run in families. However, some liver cancers can be hereditary, especially if there are other types of cancers in the family.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the abdomen, near the right shoulder blade, or back
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • A hard lump under the ribs
  • Weakness or tiredness
  • Many people with liver cancer have no symptoms

Causes/Risk Factors

  • History of hepatitis infection
  • Heavy alcohol use
  • History of chronic liver disease
