Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle cell disease is an inherited disease of the blood that causes abnormal hemoglobin blood cells. This makes the red blood cells get stuck in the tiny blood vessels, which cuts off the blood supply, causes pain and may cause organ damage.

Symptoms

  • Anemia
  • Increased risk for infection
  • Pain episodes
  • Swollen hands and feet
  • Stroke
  • Spleen problems
  • Vision problems
  • Chest pain/infection

Risk Factors

  • Family history of sickle-cell disease
  • High risk ethnic backgrounds, such as African American or Hispanic American
