Uterine Cancer

Endometrial cancer (cancer of the lining of the uterus) is the most common cancer of the female reproductive organs. Approximately 1 in 41 women will develop endometrial cancer. While most endometrial cancer does not run in the family, 1-5% of endometrial cancer is hereditary.

Symptoms

• Unusual vaginal bleeding, spotting, or discharge
• Difficulty or pain when urinating
• Pain during sexual intercourse
• Pain in the pelvic area

Causes/Risk Factors

• Increasing age
• Obesity
• Diabetes
• Family history of uterine or colon cancer
• Genetic mutations (see below)

Genetic Test

The following genetic tests may be appropriate based on your personal and/or family history:

• MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, PMS2 (Lynch syndrome/HNPCC)
• PTEN (Cowden syndrome)
• Genetic variants for uterine cancer
